The decimation of the formerly state owned industries was a pre-meditated act to break organised labour. This was a priority of the tories - partly to reward their backers in the city and partly because they were still smarting from the way Heath was done over by the miners in '72. Read the biogs of Leon Brittain, Heseltine etc - they say it themselves.

It had nothing whatosoever to do with restructuring the economy for the good of the british people.
