There is some dispute over whether the revolution was basically Islamic or whether Khomeinists took control of the revolution from an alliance of liberals, leftists, secularists and religious Iranians after the return of Khomeini.

Not only Islamists but Westerners such as Bernard Lewis[112] and Michel Foucault[113][114] see the revolution as Islamic from start to finish. Liberals and leftists may have appeared to play an important part in its early days but never seriously challenged the Khomeini movement in popular support.
