Offside rule....clarificatio n ?

Now I always thought I understood the offside rule, but....what made Adebayor onside for the last goal ?

Is it that you are onside if two players are in front of you regardless of which team they play for ?

Or is it that, regardless of whether the ball is played forward, you are onside if you are behind the ball when it is played ?
