They're REALLY dumb. Really, really dumb. Brains like peas, so they just run on pure instinct. The pheasant could have just been happily tooling through the bracken (I'm guessing on the surroundings, obv.) minding it's own business, when suddenly there a f**king great palaver in front of it, to whit the bird of prey and the rabbit. So the phesant just goes radge not knowing what exactly to do and tries to have it away on his toes (wings) as quick as he can, making all that noise they make - that in itself, I reckon, would be sufficient distraction for a bird of prey that had its sole concentration on the rabbit.
It's the rabbit I feel sorry for in all of this.
