For a start, the games are far better suited to kids. There's a great range of good fun games more suited to his age than the ones on the PSP. I'd much rather have my kid playing Mario or Zelda than Average Beat 'em Up 7 and Grand Theft Auto 321.
Second if I were a parent, I think I'd prefer my kid getting a Wii so he can at least be moving around while playing it. Keep him active and all that rather than have his eyes fixed to a screen sat in a chair all day.
And as you say it's a bit more family orientated. Easy to join in with the sports games.
Problem is you can't get Wiis for love no money at the moment and you do need a bit of room to play them.
