Don't go to Paris, It's smelly, overly big and full of french people.
If you want a good European city with a bit of culture, and you don't want to get lost, go to Rome.
It has a list of culturaly enriching places as long as Dion Dublin is in the showers, whereas Paris has the Louvre, Monmatre and Notre Dame.
Most Romans are willing to speak a bit of English, enough to get you around, unlike the French, but the whole city's set up for Yank tourists anyway so most signs are bilingual.
If you go at this time of year it's not stupidly busy, my GF and I only cued for about 30-45 mins to get into the Vatican museums (including Cistine Chapel), it's 2hrs+ in the summer..
You can walk across the main area of the city in an hour or so, and there's only 2 metro lines so very little to confuse you in that respect.
If you wait a couple of weeks they may even start the footy again.
