They had to abandon it after 6 days

Not because it became violent (as I had always thought); but because of the psychological damage it was doing to the "prisoners" *and* the "guards". Even the prisoner parents, a prison chaplain, a laywer and an ex-con - even Zimbardo himself (who played the governor) forgot that it was an experiment and succumbed to the constraints of their roles and the system they had invented.

Six days! And Guantanamo has been going for five years ...
