Absolutely

Have been through the pain many times. Have only "got away with it" once and that was when coincidently the new mboard had the same chipset as the old. That was with win 98 though.

With 2000/XP much better to do a clean install. With a follow up windows update of all the latest hot fixes you will have a much more stable machine overall.
