I don't know much about Blackberry (or mobile tech in general to be honest), but it seems to me that it's just email on a phone, which the iPhone also does.

Given the huge resources at their disposal, MS can compete in - even dominate - almost any market (IE and XBox for example); but that's a whole other discussion ...
