The date we will know for sure the direction this club is going. If we get to this date without having signed any players of note we will no doubt be treated to an edifying lecture from Doncaster re how difficult is is to get players.

You know the sort of thing, clubs not letting players go, operating with smaller squads, too expensive and so on. Someone earlier on this board pointed to Doncaster being at the root of our ineffectiveness in the transfer market of late. There maybe some truth in that, especially as he took a position on the Board last year and consequently has more influence.

Doncaster may be a fan, but at heart he is a bean counter - someone who likes things to add up. I am not saying the club should risk its future by paying over the odds for players but looking at the way other clubs are strengthening in this league, you get the distinct impression we are being left behind.

I really hope Grant succeeds but he is inexperienced. He doesn't have the contacts at other clubs an experienced manager would have had time to develop. As a result, he is finding difficult to bring his targets to the club.

Things will be a lot clearer come 1 Feb.
