because if it had all gone pear shaped

as the opening ten minutes looked like it might you don't wont youngesters on the bench when you are chasing a game with 20 mins to go ,you have them on the bench one at a time and put them on when you are 3 up in a league match ,but their all s**t anyway which is probably the real reason
