ebay advice sought

i often see auctions on ebay that mention something about nigerian scams. now i've just sold an item to a guy with no feedback who sent me this email

I am happy to be the winner of your item which is listed on ebay auction.It's is unfortunate that this item is to be shipped outside UK.I will be happy if you can permit me to buy this item for my son.who is currently outside canada toward efficient property development and management in west African NIGERIA.so i will like to ask you if the item is still in your stock so that i can make the payment via paypal or moneygram.so get back to me with the shipping cost.

this sounds decidedly dodgy to me, so could anyone just summise what exactly this scam involves, and whether this looks like an example of it?
