to be fair you are right to a degree,

a lot do ignore Espanyol due to them being largely unsuccessful in their history. but the rivalry with madrid is more fierce because of a number of issues, e.g. trophies won, politics, e.t.c.

there are a large number who do hate Espanyol with a passion though.
