though i'm sure the idea of spunking between ?2.9m and ?3.5m on him was made with us still being in with a reasonable chance of making the play-offs and getting promoted

in which case the return on our investment in him would have been far more than any transfer fee would could ever hope to get for him (unless Chelski bought him off us...)
