Semi agree

Last season was our worst in terms of goals conceded since 56/7 - generally supposed to be our worst season ever. So I would have thought that no-one was guaranteed a place - yet every centre back pairing we tried was Fleming & someone. I don't think Flem was as bad as some have claimed - but he certainly wasn't so good that dropping him was inconceivable. On paper for instance - MacKay and Charlton looks like a better fit than Fleming and Charlton. Or what about Helveg and Shackell? Youth and experience. Left and right foot. Guile and pace. Or Doherty and Charlton. All of them seem worth a try. So yes, perhaps Shackell could have come in sooner - but certainly something different should have been tried. And you're right about needing at least one big centre back - so I would always start with either Doherty or Shackell)
