Computer problems

On the subject of Spyware I am having real trouble with pop ups. My girlfriend tried to download some stupid free movie software on my computer and ever since I have had really annoying pop ups appearing every now and then even though I have removed the software and used spybot. I have also set my internet not to allow any pop ups but they still appear. Does anyonehave any idea what I can do to get rid of these popups as they are driving me mad.
