For those shouting for free trade - its not a simple quick fix issue. A couple of points to consider:
a) Protection to third world suppliers in various market segments. If you open the market up to free trade the third world suppliers may not be ready for a competitive market place. Textile quotas were changed this year and China has swamped the market and put third world suppliers under alot of pressure.
b) Impact on jobs in developed countries - a significant part of UK's manufacturing has been exported to cheap labour countries. The hollowing out process is gathering speed in the service sector,
e.g., call centre and admin jobs being exported to Asian countries.
