A former classmate of Stephens' yesterday described him as "a nerd" who was known for wearing extremely tight trousers.

The man added: "He'd hang around on the edge of social groups and never had a girlfriend.

"He was an introverted type who did not seem to have many friends.

"He would hang around on the outside of other people's groups. He didn't generally say very much and never seemed to have much self-confidence. Nobody ever thought he would get a girlfriend. It just didn't seem to be an issue with him."

Another ex-classmate added: "Tom was polite, but quiet and quite an awkward boy. His mum was absolutely lovely and they were a very respectable middle-class family."
