reliable and cheap service for the average customer.

Private firms would only be able to make money out of business customers, and they already operate in that market anyway.

Would never have such an efficient and comprehensive postal network if it was jst left to market forces and a host of private entities. It's one of those areas (like the rail system) that really should be left to monopolies.
