Thing is, the telecoms operators are more than capable of discovering and telling the police either which GSM mast, or which UMTS cell the phone was on when that message was sent, which would place the whereabouts at the time of sending it within a few hundred yards radius.

It takes a few hours to trace through the packets to find it out exactly, but it is not only possible but the ability to do so and provide police the information is a legal requirement for telecoms operators.
