Black socks. Not brown, striped, grey, or with cartoons on them. Black. (Unless wearing a white suit, in which case I'm wasting my breath).
Avoid at all costs ties/waistcoats/socks with cartoon characters on them - a. you'll look like a total berk, and b, it kinda defeats the purpose of dressing up.
Wear a decent pair of well-polished black dress shoes. If you don't have a pair, invest in them, cos they will help you at interviews and other occasions where you need to look sharp. These things ARE noticed! Again, if you turn up in a suit wearing trainers, you'll just look like a moron.
It's hard to go wrong with a good quality silk tie. Black, obviously, if it's specified, otherwise a single colour or simple design. If coloured, it should match your cummerbund (bow tie only!) or waistcoat.
YOUR BELT MUST MATCH YOUR SHOES! Similarly, I like to either match my cufflinks to the secondary colour (Shirt, or waistcoat if I'm wearing one) of the outfit. Failing that, go silver.
If you're wearing a watch, get a decent stainless-steel job. Not one which looks like a metal filing cabinet strapped to your wrist, nor your normal cheap black Casio. You don't have to spend a fortune on a respectable-looking watch.
Stupid as it sounds, get your hair cut. Treat yourself to a new razor blade. If you're going to go sharp, look f**king sharp.
Most of all, have a wicked time!
