Maybe, maybe not.

Sony have been accused of using the PS3 to flood the market with Blu Ray players to help them win the format war with HD-DVD.
It seems to me that the real issue is that there is not a whole lot wrong with ordinary DVD (in that the jump from DVD to Blu Ray/HD DVD doesn't have the same advantages that video to DVD did) and possibly neither format will "win".
It's all moot to me, because I don't have a telly capable of rendering either format.
