I was trying to remember, and thought it was something to do with Hayles. I think Les Ferdinand weighed in in the furore afterwards, saying his experience of Wisbech was appalling too.

And that can be the problem at games like these: local rent-a-mobs attach themselves for the day (often whipped up by a local press who should damn well know better), and can make the experience bloody unpleasant, as it sounds as though happened with you. Sounds dreadful!
