to justify why we have no money to spend.

This is a bit of a myth about if he's had a longer contract we would have had to pay him 2 or 3 years worth. That supposes that he would have had 2 or 3 years left on his contract. That would not have happened as even we would not have been stupid enough to give him a contract on relegation from the prem.
