eternity rings - help needed

i have noticed that a lot of other peoples' wives wear eternity rings. i'd never really heard of these until my sister in law made a pointed comment (which was when i started looking out for one).

can anyone tell me

- how i managed to get to my mid-thirties without being aware of them at all

- at what point i "should" have got my wife one (we've been married quite a few years now)

- if the appropriate thing is to surprise her with one or take her shopping for one so she can choose it (i'm crap at jewellery)
