Both there for the same (negative) reason - the tail would be too long otherwise.
I think the game plan is to escape Brisbane with a draw, and get more attacking as the series goes on.
On balance I think I probably agree with you that Giles is a mistake. Not so sure about Jones for Reid - in most tests the difference in their keeping won't make much difference (particularly with GIles playing - not too many stumpings there). And Jones *should* be more likely to help out with the bat.
