It doesn't require highly intelligent players. It requires an intelligent

manager and coach who is capable of teaching it to not-very-intelligent players.

My coaching has all been in American Football which is a highly complex sport, but I've seen crap coaches who cannot get a simple concept over to an aerospace engineer, and then shout at him all game, and I've seen coaches who can teach the details and nuances of Run 'n' Shoot vs Zone-Man hybrid defensive coverages to guys who can hardly spell their names.

Do you honestly think great total football players like the de Boer brothers, Marc Overmars and Willem van Hanegem had IQs over 100 ?

No, but Rinus Michels did.
