Yes, that's exactly my point.

These are rational people. Catholics in the main, granted, so a bit open to the old supranatural, but on the whole not people who live in fear of the banshee coming and sitting on thier roof, or the closet monster.

But they all agree that you don't go looking for the cave, becuase bad things happen. To be fair, that's more than just idle superstition: people who have gone looking for the cave have ended up dead in the process, and that's a matter of public record. Whether the people attribute that to some supernatural Curse of Moctezuma (some do) or whether they take the pragmatic view that "if I don't go looking for the cave I won't die in the process of looking for the cave" is another matter.
