"Rumours a chicken may have been involved are unsubstantiated"

It's always worth reading the back of the packet to find out exactly what's in there. For example, I used to like an occasional pork pie but I've given up over here as there is so little pork involved (20-25%? Fuck off!). And of that, it usually seems to be hooves and hide and snot and floorsweepings, not actual flesh.

Pork and chicken are shockers for this; check the package when you next buy chicken or pork. If you look hard enough, most of them will have water as an ingredient "For added succulence" or some other such bulls**t. What they are really adding it for is to increase the weight so they can charge more; and when you cook it, you will notice that it shrinks like buggery making the whole think redundant.

While I'm on the subject, the amount of mechanically recovered meat passed off as the proper thing is astonishing. I find that fish, in particular, is 90% of the time "chopped and shaped" (i.e. mechanically recovered, combined with god knows what, and extruded) whilest being sold as "fillets". Ditto many chicken products.
