I suspect you're right

Although sadly 86% of internet users use Internet Explorer, so from a management perspective they probably just didn't care.

As you say, it's nothing to do with the club - they have no say in the matter, but it does affect the club's revenue streams as they get a cut from the subscriptions and payments for each unique (I think) page impression on the OS.
