Also, if I read between the lines, he's been harrassing this woman for a while (allegedly). It's hinted at that his drink-driving conviction (which I remember being for actually a fairly low amount rather than being steaming) came after he'd been spotted following the woman, so maybe they took the opportunity to nick him for whatever they could. Stalking / harrassment is incredibly hard to police in any other way.

I hope I'm wrong and Mendham has been stitched up, but sounds to me like a bloke coming off the rails.
