Off Topic: FAO John in Texas - American Citizens' right to bear arms

As I understand it, the constitution doesn't actually grant this right at all. I'd google it if i could be arsed, but my understanding is that the clause was written into the constitution in order to allow Americans to form a militia so as to overthrow any future US Government which began to oppress the majority or generally behave in an overbearing and unacceptable manner (imagine that!!!).

However the long-time strength of the NRA and the popularity and easy availability of weapons makes it absolutely impossible that the current situation might be addressed and the actual terms of the constitution applied.

I accept that I may be well off the mark here. That wouldn't come as a shock.
