The argument I was given (and I don't necessarily oppose it)

is that American patriotism is not based upon the state (as opposed to British patriotism) but on personal liberty of which the second ammendment is the cornerstone. Of course it is not as simplistic as comparing US/UK but I do admire the basic tenet.
