Where are they coming from?
The fact is that there are political reasons for it as well as economic.
Say 40% of 18 year olds go to university. That's around 350 000 people each year. Multiply by the three years of university and that's over a million people at any one time. So say only 10% should go to university. That leaves 260 000 people to find work.
So your choices are:
a) Try to magic up 750 000+ over 3 years
or
b) Better skill people of the long time at the cost of some getting unrealistic expectations.
Not a easy choice either way but consider the desolation and disaffection felt by the thousands of unemployed in the Eighties.
