Well I would firstly like to state that I am happy that Worthington has finally moved on from NCFC. However I would also like to thank him for the last 6 years excitement; a play-off final, promotion, and relegation on the last day of the season. Ok, not all of the time under Worthy has been enjoyable but at least we had some exciting times and not one boring season (maybe excluding last year). Just a few comments on the whole scenario at Carrow Road:
Board
They have pretty much done as promised- they gave Worthy 10 games to improve on last years results. They saw he was not capable of moving the club on further and have not dismissed him. I personally say very well done to the board on all accounts; considering a high proportion of relegated clubs struggle in their first season back in the Championship, I thought it was fair to give Worthy another chance. He failed and the board acted accordingly.
Manager
When he took over we were a very average Championship side with our main ambition each year to avoid relegation. However since Worthy we have had great success by being in the Premiership, play-offs, and winning the division, something we haven?t done since 1971-72. He has turned us into a top-half championship side rather than a bottom-half team. Unfortunately this success seems to be a reason to his downfall, as many supporters now think that we have a right to Premiership football, whereas 6 years ago when he took over we were happy with Div 1 football. Thanks to his success, fans now expect too much and quite frankly this shows a pure lack of football knowledge (only a minority of fans included obviously). I appreciate that Worthington had his weaknesses i.e. tactical awareness, substitutions etc, but I really think he had his heart in the job, and tried 100% at all times. Thank you once again Worthington, and I?m sorry the fans treated you the way they did at the end. However my one negative view on his departure is that he simply waited for the pay day at getting sacked, which I feel a bit sour about. But I hope you are remembered for the good times, and not the bad.
Fans
Well I have never been more embarrassed to be a NCFC supported than in the last 9-10 months, and I feel so ashamed to associate with the so-called Norwich fans. How any fan can turn on a manager who has offered such success to our football club just baffles me. My gut instinct is that the supporters who were so against Worthington were the glory boys who started supporting Norwich either when we reached the play-offs or the championship year, and therefore have no recollection of the poor football and results prior to Worthington?s arrival (1995-2000). To the people who were singing ?You might as well f*ck off?- you are a disgrace, and you are better off taking your own advice. All the protests and card showing just shows how immature and the lack of respect you have for your own football club. This helped neither the manager, players, or board is seeking our objective; premiership football. If the players read this website, and saw the comments stating that some supporters wanted us to lose (well why the f*ck should they try for you guys!!). I actually didn?t make the game yesterday but watched it on Sky, and the atmosphere was the worst I heard for years. One of the reasons I think we went up in 2002-03 was the great support we gave the players, and maybe now the fans might concentrate on the team, and not there own selfish attitudes.
The Future
To be honest I can?t really see why a decent manager would want to come to Norwich, and I can see us getting either a lower division manager, or a non-proven ex player i.e. Crook, Bowen, Newman. Why? Because why would a Curbishley, Robson, Reid want to come to NCFC where they have just seen on Sky Sports cameras the fans (in the loose sense of the word) slate one of the most successful managers in recent times. To them, it shows that the NCFC fans (who believe they are the greatest in the world) are very fickle believe are club is bigger than it is. I can still see us getting to the play-offs as we have great players at the club, but we need a manager to come in and re-build on what Worthy has achieved. However this might not happen due to the animosity of the fans towards Worthington. So for all of you fans who thought you were doing the club proud, just think about what you have actually achieved for the club when they bring in a less-than qualified manager. Ok, Doncaster has stated that they have had interest for the job, but that?s probably from less-than qualified personnel who want a quick buck. I think the real lesson in all of this is; Trust the board, as they basically did what they said they would do. As a great footballing term states: ?no-one is bigger than the football club?, so please fans keep to supporting the club, and not to footballing matters you have no idea about.
Hopefully we can all now re-unite and create the atmosphere that Carrow Road needs for us to gain promotion. If this happens, I think that the club may again strive for the premiership, and hopefully gain promotion this year. Sorry about the long post, but hope you enjoyed my thoughts- but probably not!!!
