I know it's Worthy in or out time, but just: Simon Charlton = Xabi Alonso?

A DELIGHTED Simon Charlton spoke to oldhamathletic.co.uk after he scored with an amazing 65-yard effort during this afternoon's thumping 4-1 victory over Gillingham.

With Latics 2-0 up, Charlton cleared the ball upfield from the kick-off, only to see it bounce over the head of hapless Gills stopper Ross Flinders and into the net.

"If Xabi Alonso can do it, then why not me?", joked Charlton. "It took a lucky bounce - those kind of breaks do come along every so often, so you accept them when they do."

"I was getting closed down pretty sharpish so I had to hurry a little bit, and I got plenty on it. Like the old adage goes, if you don't buy a ticket then you don't win the lottery."

Charlton also issued a confident message as Latics racked up another three points to continue their recent run of good form:

"My aim has always been promotion, and you have to always believe in your aims. I haven't come to the club just to see out my career."

"I've been around football at all levels, and no matter what team you're playing in or what level you're at, confidence is 75% of the game. The only way to get confidence is to win games first and foremost - it doesn't matter how - and players then get more and more belief in themselves."

"Some of the passing you saw today was exceptional - you won't see better in some Premiership games, and I can say that from my own experience."

Additionally, Charlton was pleased with the team's performance after half-time, saying:

"To play that well in both halves is quite unusual, normally the other team gets a rollicking from the manager and comes out fighting. John told us to carry on doing exactly the same as we were in the first half, and for the majority of the second period we did that."

WELL DONE CHARLIE!!!! ;-)
