i'd say it's deliberately ambiguous

if thay'd have come out half way through last season and said that a play off place minimum was required and then we'd missed out on 6th on goal difference or a last minute dodgy penalty given against us on the last day of the season or half the team were taken out by an insane gun man or something then sacking any manager could be seen as being a little harsh

i'd think they'd be taking a lot more than just league position into account when making any decision which is why it could be construed as being wrong to make a definate statement
