I'd reword that...

"Getting 20 thousand fans to not take their seats, especially when at least half of them are...there for the football, can remember the REALLY bad times and aren't looking to sharpen the knives just because we haven't had a good week, given the raised standards, and therefore expectations, set a few years back."
