...enough to build basic stuff without worrying too much about performance.

A good professional programmer needs to know the ins and outs of the objects he is using in my opinion - memory issues, caveats, best practices, etc. That's not such a doddle. Too many hobbyists out there talking their way into programming jobs and it often takes a few months to realise they aren't all that.
