Interesting that for years the general view of lesser nations playing the top 20

is seen as a form of eliteism

I've always thought that the world cup should be invitational to the to the top 25 sides

Those sides would have a definite entrants as a top ten that would be in the world cup no matter what ie teams like

Brazil
Argentina
England
Spain
France
Italy
Germany

Up to about 25 teams, there'd be a definite 7 extra places up for grabs, and the rest of the world would have to qualify for those places

Seems pretty stupid to make teams go through all that qualifying, as well as home league fixtures, cup and european cup competition to expect qualifying too

Which is probably why the world champions couldn't beat lithuania in a qualifying game at the weekend, only 6 weeks after lifting the trophy

This is eliteist, but anybody knows Italy are better than Lithuania, it's just a one off result. It becomes almost unnecessary to play these games imo
