That's not entirely true.

It's popular at international level, true. But the major law changes were made to go to the current Law 42 in the 60s. Somewhat of a suspect causality there.

To my mind, Test cricket is popular at the moment as England have a winning team. Go watch county cricket to see how popular it is.

As an example, Essex make more in one night of Twenty20 than they do out of 2 years in the County Championship.
