If you're after a decent grad position, every Tom Dick & Harry has a 2:1 from a good uni these days, so good A-Levels are a must. (And even then everyone has top grades so you need a good CV too).
Always worth appealing. I regret not appealing mine as the C came back to haunt me, even with the rest being As. If competition is fierce then anything but top grades is going to hold you back.
The same applies to the first year - whatever people tell you, it *does* matter and you cant afford to just piss it all away and scrape through with a third or 2:2.
