Noticed the debate further down the board re Hiroshima and the bombing of dresden etc.
Apologies if this has already been noted but there was one of those a dramatised documentaries on TV last year to mark the 60th anniversary. In it they mentioned that Japan were prepared to surrender but not unconditionally. There were some members of the Imperial government that wanted to fight on and a statement from the US State Department was misconstrued as conciliatory. This encouraged the Japanese to hold out for a conditional surrender more on their terms despite the warnings from the US.
The rest, as they say, is history.
