Atlantic Records major label, Indie is term used for underground bands

signed to tiny labels to release music, of which they would get the attention from those single releases, and a major would step in and distribute it nationwide/worldwide

Indie has taken over from that as all record companies are satellites of major labels these days (bought out mainly)

Some bands still release their singles on their funding to get noticed. So the genre is still used as most bands are unknown
