But after speaking with him they didn't pursue it, so I suspect he was too expensive.

He may well be hoping that a Prem club that start badly WILL be willing to cough up that sort of money (like Brum last season). Especially since once the transfer window closes he'll be one of the only players they CAN sign, being unattached to any club.
