I bet his wage demands would suggest where his real love was

if he wanted to play for us that badly he'd do it for cheap so we could easily afford him, but I rather suspect that isn't the case.
I suspect in our view he isn't worth what he is demanding, which is an assessment you have to make about any potential target.
