This design change to the shorts was partly to reflect the latest research into aerodynamic properties of stretched man-made composite fabrics, but mostly at the request of Dean Ashton - ironic given that he now plays elsewhere.

Adam has a special dispensation to wear flappy shorts as apparently he's worried that he's got an internet stalker from Hong Kong and he doesn't want to give the impression he's leading him on. Bit of a bind for me obviously as they're a slightly different fabric from the rest, but we have to protect our players.
