Hi there, I feel Ican give you a medical opinion, as I am a doctor. Provided you're still reading this far down the board.
As people have said the "crack" can be bone or ligaments. The injury is more likely to be a fracture if the swelling came up quickly, but that's by no means always the case.
Basically if you pitch up at A&E, you get an X-ray if it's very difficult to walk on, it's tender over the bony bit when you prod it, or there's "significant" swelling. So it sounds like you could do with an Xray, and to get this you need to bite the bullet and go to hospital.
If it's more painful on the outside edge of your foot then it may be one of the bones in your foot that kept Gary Neville out of the 2002 World Cup.
But basically it's most likely to be a sprain and they'll give you some ibuprofen and a lovely stocking.
