Last season I watched Dereham play Wroxham and Dereham had a young (ish) player up front called Daniel Wright who I thought was a class above the rest despite a slightly ungainly style. He scored a hat trick in that game and 32 goals for the season despite a two month injury lay off. Although he looked a bit awkward his ball control and finishing ability was outstanding.
Andy Boothroyd watched him in the senior cup final at Carrow Road and immediately offered him a trial at Watford. He scored a goal for Watford reserves in his first match and they immediately offered him professional terms subject to medical. Unfortunately he was found to have a small stress fracture in his back and Boothroyd was not allowed to sign an injured player. However Watford have told him that he is to return as soon as the injury has cleared up and in all probability they will sign him.
Norwich (no doubt on hearing about Watford's interest about a player on their patch) offered him a trial on the eve of his holiday but didn't bother to contact him on his return. Daniel said 'Norwich just couldn't be bothered'. No doubt Worthy was too busy to chasing a 30 year old 'has been' to sign a real young prospect for nothing.
Watch this Space as Daniel bursts in to the Premiership sometime around Christmas, makes the England set up by the end 2008 season and partner's Dean Ashton in the next World cup.
