because the Iranians suffered for years under a nasty dictator sponsored by the likes of the US and Israel and the mullahs provided the most effective opposition to him, eventually overthrowing him.

And Iran is a very democratic country by M East standards, so a lot of the anti-Israel rhetoric is mainly for vote-winning purposes (just like George Bush's 'Axis of Evil' speeches).
